The Microsoft Windows Phone team recently asked us to help them generate excitement around the launch of their new Mango operating system. So, we designed a premium launch/seeding kit that brought the functionality of the system’s digital experience to life through a distinctly analog approach. A limited series of the phone packages - featuring die cut slip covers, emoticon stickers, and branded text bubble post-its - were produced for a range of editors and media influencers. The end result was a tangible gift that portrayed the user experience of Mango in a fun, surprising, and impactful way.

Cinco Family Supper

Recently, the Cinco family gathered to commemorate the successes of 2011 and to inaugurate our new South Studio Expansion. We celebrated the growth of our space with a family-style supper, featuring food and wine pairings by The Woodsman Tavern’s Chef Jason Barwikowski and Carly Laws with great chill tunes by The Kung Pao Chickens. The evening was topped off with the first snow of the season– turning Portland into a nighttime winter wonderland.

About 20 of the team at Cinco headed up to Mt. Hood and spent last Friday night at Silcox Hut. We were lucky enough to be there on a crystal clear night to catch an awesome sunset, lunar eclipse and sun rise. After an amazing breakfast, we hit the hill as a team for Saturday Shred Day 2011. All in all, it was an epic weekend with an epic group of people.

Nixon Fall 2012 Watches Bring the Past into the Future.

Our work with Nixon this fall has been an exciting challenge. We looked back to some of the most iconic watches we’d designed in years past, and brought a fresh new take to them. This exercise gave us the bold new Automatic II, which redefines Nixon’s place in the premium watch business, and the Manual II, an update to the top-selling classic.

Taking inspiration from the past, the Axe’s strong roll bar design has made it a favorite throughout the studio with its classic detailing and soft leather strap. Blending the past with the future, we designed the Rubber 51-30, applying progressive materials to a brand icon.

Lastly, with a rotating bezel to change modes in the UI, The Genie is one of the most innovative watches of the season. We asked the Magic 8 Ball mode if the new Nixon watches are hot. It answered, “Yes – definitely.”

Need for Speed – The RUN

November 15, 2011 marks the release date of Need for Speed – The Run. EA asked us to help craft the visual language and identity for this epic cross-country racing game. In The Run, you drive as the main character Jack Rourke, whose life is hinged upon winning the race against hundreds of other drivers. Designing the identity, key art and campaign imagery, we helped re-imagine this Hollywood blockbuster racing game. We’re stoked to see The Run hit shelves, and now it’s time to play!

Moon Contact Lens Case

Beverly Moon, one of our Senior Product Experience Designers here at Cinco, steps out in a personal challenge to refine everyday objects. She takes a second look at the mundane that we use daily and re-thinks our interactions with them. Her beautiful contact lens case made of Corian and crafted by local machinists is an amazing example of how a simple idea can be very surprising. Nixon Street League Skateboarding Trophy Watch

Sean Malto took home top honors and the custom Nixon Street League Skateboarding trophy watch, which was adorned with nearly 15 carats of diamonds, bringing the overall value of the timepiece in excess of $50,000 USD. Cinco worked closely with the Nixon product team to design a range of concepts for the watch and the custom box that Rob Dyrdek and the Street League team approved to create this amazing icon. The custom 51-30 features a Swiss made movement, stainless steel case and band, custom engraved case back and bezel complete with sapphire crystal. The watch showcases 963 total diamonds on the case, band and dial, making it truly extravagant and unique.

Congrats to Sean, Street League and Nixon for raising the bar once again.

Kara Fullmer joins Cinco as Managing Director.

If you want to be on a big stage, you need rock stars. Kara is just that. She comes from a long history of leading world-class design programs with major global brands. During her five years at JDK in Burlington, VT, Kara worked closely with the leadership team to refine the mechanics of the studio and helped manage some of the studio’s largest accounts, including the Xbox 360 Global launch, Zune and Burton Snowboards’ portfolio of brands. From there, Kara came to Portland to forge JDK West, moving on to work directly with Merrell, Nike and Adidas – among many others.

Kara will be leading our Account and Business teams to help take Cinco to new heights. Her passion and connection to our audience is exactly what we need moving into the future.
